The Bronx is an area of New York City that is full of potential for community engagement opportunities. From mentoring programs for young people who have been arrested, to environmental restoration projects, there are many ways for residents to get involved in their local communities. Our long-term planning program is designed to assess residents' needs and identify projects that can help improve quality of life in the area. We also partner with organizations that can provide resources and connections for our participants.
The SBCC model is a great example of how religious and community organizations can come together to engage young people who have been arrested. This program provides leadership skills for local high school and college age students so they can lead restoration projects and get their communities involved in caring for their parks. Support the Bronx is Blooming also has a successful community engagement program that works with schools and other groups in the area. The results of these programs are impressive - compared to similarly situated young people in The Bronx, SBCC participants were one-third less likely to be re-arrested and only half as likely to have new charges brought against them.
This shows just how powerful these programs can be in helping young people stay on track and out of trouble. Community engagement projects are also helping revitalize neighborhood parks in The Bronx. Residents are encouraged to participate in voluntary events that give them the chance to take part in environmental management of their green spaces. This makes it easier for everyone to come together and make their parks more beautiful and enjoyable places for everyone.
The Bronx has so much potential when it comes to community engagement opportunities. By working together, we can create a better future for everyone. Our long-term planning program is a series of community engagement and research project planning events that assess residents' needs, quality of life, and make significant contributions to transformative projects within their community across the Bronx. Our staff works with residents and community groups to identify neighborhood projects that respond to local needs.
Our partners also offer our participants resources and new points of connection with the community.
