The Bronx, New York is a vibrant city with many projects currently underway. The New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) is actively working to enhance the infrastructure, security, and economic development of the area. At community board meetings, citizens can ask questions and provide feedback on the various projects. The NYCDOT is proposing an elevated pedestrian crossing on 54th Street, as well as several new crossings with improved pedestrian shelter space.
This will create shorter and safer crossings, while also increasing visibility for pedestrians. Edwards Street will also be improved with new pedestrian space and ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps along the project boundaries. The Hunts Point improvement project is another major initiative that will provide essential investments in the South Bronx. This project includes two new pedestrian crossings, a painted pedestrian space, a medium length of concrete, and reconfigured traffic lanes for better operation.
Park Avenue will be converted into a protected bike path between 165th East and 188 East Streets, including a bidirectional protected bike path between 165th East and 173rd Streets. The 34th Avenue project is another priority corridor for pedestrians and cyclists. This project will improve safety and accessibility through shared streets and vehicle diverters, while also creating new vibrant public spaces focused on schools along the corridor. The proposed project creates new pedestrian crossings aligned with the pedestrian traffic lines within the intersection and helps clarify movements for both drivers and pedestrians.
The Grand Concourse project between 175th and 198th East Streets consists of expanding sidewalks, improving existing medians, installing new markings for pedestrian crossings, adding main pedestrian intervals (LPI), and building an island of refuge for pedestrians. With these projects underway, the Bronx is sure to become an even more lively city.
